Iron operates as an important factor promoting year-round diazotrophic cyanobacteria blooms in eutrophic reservoirs in the tropics

2021

Abstract We hypothesize that iron availability plays an important role in driving phytoplankton structure and dynamics in tropical reservoir. This role has often been neglected in routine monitoring of water quality since the main focus has been addressed on macronutrients such phosphorus and nitrogen. To elucidate the potential regulation exerted by iron availability on phytoplankton, a limnological investigation was carried out in two neighboring eutrophic reservoirs in tropical China. Traditional physical and chemical variables were measured along with total and dissolved iron concentrations to explore how they could influence phytoplankton structure. Statistical analyses showed that dis…

Medium enthalpy geothermal systems in carbonate reservoirs, the Western Sicily example.

2013

The multidisciplinary and integrated review of existing data (mainly acquired during oil exploration), specifically reread for geothermal purposes, and the integration with new data acquired in particular key areas, such as the Mazara Del Vallo site in the southern part of western Sicily, allowed us to better understand this -regional scale- medium-enthalpy geothermal system (with measured temperatures up to 100 °C), to reconstruct the modalities and peculiarities of fluids circulation, and to evaluate the geothermal potentialities of western Sicily. We suggest that these findings could be taken as exemplificative of the behavior of low-to medium enthalpy geothermal systems hosted in carbon…

A population-based coprological study of human fascioliasis in a hyperendemic area of the Bolivian Altiplano

1997

The community of Chijipata Alta, at an altitude of 3850 m, near the southern coast of Lake Titicaca in the Northern Altiplano of Bolivia, was surveyed for human fascioliasis. The global prevalence (66.7 %) and intensity (eggs per gram of faeces - epg: range: 24-4440; arithmetic mean: IooI; geometric mean: 390) proved to be the highest known in the world by means of coprological techniques. These results suggest the existence of highly hyperendemic subzones among the large human fascioliasis-endemic zone of the Bolivian Northern Altiplano. Despite the decrease in prevalence and intensity from children (75.0%, 24-4440 epg) to adults (41.7%, 144-864 epg), our findings show that in an hyperende…

Rodent host population dynamics drive zoonotic Lyme Borreliosis and Orthohantavirus infections in humans in Northern Europe

2021

Zoonotic diseases, caused by pathogens transmitted between other vertebrate animals and humans, pose a major risk to human health. Rodents are important reservoir hosts for many zoonotic pathogens, and rodent population dynamics affect the infection dynamics of rodent-borne diseases, such as diseases caused by hantaviruses. However, the role of rodent population dynamics in determining the infection dynamics of rodent-associated tick-borne diseases, such as Lyme borreliosis (LB), caused by Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato bacteria, have gained limited attention in Northern Europe, despite the multiannual abundance fluctuations, the so-called vole cycles, that characterise rodent population d…

Long-term follow-up of submucosal tunnel and serosa-lined extramural tunnel ureter implantation in ileocaecal continent cutaneous urinary diversion (…

2007

Authors from Mainz, Germany present the long-term follow-up of submucosal tunnel and serosa-lined extramural tunnel ureter implantation in the ileocaecal continent cutaneous urinary diversion first described in that department, called the Mainz-Pouch I. OBJECTIVE To assess upper urinary tract complications and renal function in patients with a submucosal tunnel and serosa-lined extramural tunnel ureter implantation during the long-term follow-up of ileocaecal continent cutaneous urinary diversion (Mainz pouch I). PATIENTS AND METHODS In all, 458 patients who had diversion with the ileocaecal pouch were analysed in a retrospective follow-up study. Uretero-intestinal implantation was done usi…

Multiple Non-linear Reservoirs to Model Water Balance Components in Sandy Soils

2023

In the hydrologic literature, to model water flow in unsaturated soils, the Richards equation is usually applied, allowing the main components of the hydrologic cycle, as rainfall partitioning into surface runoff and infiltration, to be determined. The Richards equation is highly nonlinear, making very challenging to derive analytical solutions. Recently, for constant rainfall intensity, under the simplified hypothesis of gravity-driven infiltration, and by assuming a capacitance framework, a simplified solution of the Richards equation that considers the Brooks and Corey hydraulic conductivity function was suggested. By maintaining the assumption that the infiltration process is dominated …

Continent diversion with the Mainz pouch.

1996

From 1983 until July 1994, 561 patients in 2 urology departments (Mainz and Wuppertal) underwent a Mainz pouch 1 procedure. The Mainz pouch 1 was used for bladder augmentation in 60 patients, for orthotopic bladder substitution in 61 patients, and for continent cutaneous urinary diversion in 440 patients. In the group of continent cutaneous urinary diversion, the continence mechanism applied was an ileal intussusception nipple in 270 patients, an appendix stoma in 146 patients, a submucosal seromuscular bowel-flap tube in 14 patients, and a submucosal full-thickness bowel-flap tube in 10 patients. Indications for urinary diversion were bladder cancer in 339 patients, anatomical or functiona…
